Massachusetts LICSW Continuing Education, Cycle by Cycle

Massachusetts LICSWs need 30 CE hours every two years, including 10 clinical, 3 ethics, and newer equity and violence content. Here is the full stack.

Massachusetts social workers used to have a fairly plain CE requirement. Then the Board layered in equity and violence content, and the 30-hour cycle quietly grew more specific. If your last renewal was a few years ago, the rules you remember are not the rules you'll renew under now.

Here's the current shape of it for LICSWs, the state's clinical license tier.

The 30 hours, broken down

Each two-year cycle, you need 30 hours total. Inside that:

  • 10 clinical hours — at least a third of your total has to be clinical content, which makes sense for a clinical license.
  • 3 ethics hours — the near-universal behavioral-health requirement.
  • 2 anti-racism hours with a focus on oppression.
  • 1 anti-discrimination hour.
  • 2 hours of Board-approved domestic and sexual violence training.

The remaining hours are elective. One genuinely convenient thing about Massachusetts: all 30 credits may be distance learning. There's no live-participation floor like you'll find for Georgia counselors or New York pharmacists. That flexibility is rarer than you'd think, and the live-vs-enduring distinction simply doesn't constrain you here.

The newer equity and violence pieces

The anti-racism, anti-discrimination, and domestic-and-sexual-violence hours are the additions that catch returning licensees off guard. They're small — five hours combined — but each is its own bucket, so you can't satisfy them with a single general DEI course. The violence requirement in particular has to be Board-approved training, not just any workshop with "trauma" in the title. Domestic-violence content is showing up in more and more license types; we trace that trend in domestic-violence CE, a requirement hiding in plain sight.

Ethics: how Massachusetts compares

Three ethics hours per cycle is on the lighter end for social workers. Texas LCSWs owe 6 ethics hours plus a distinct-population requirement, which is double. If you've practiced in both states, don't assume the Texas number satisfies Massachusetts or vice versa — they're separate obligations on separate licenses. The broader survey of LCSW ethics hours by state shows how widely this varies.

Renewal timing

Massachusetts renews LICSWs every two years by the licensee's birthdate, not on a fixed statewide date. That's friendlier than Georgia's hard September 30 deadline for counselors, but it also means you can't rely on a coworker's renewal month — yours is your own. The gap between your CE deadline and your license expiration is something to confirm rather than guess.

If the Social Work Compact ever goes live, this could change — but for now it's enacted, not issuing, so Massachusetts CE stands on its own.

The official requirements are on the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Social Workers page. For your exact obligations see our Massachusetts LICSW requirements page, or browse clinical social worker CE by state.
