Illinois LPCs and LCPCs need 30 CE hours every two years, including ethics, sexual harassment prevention, implicit bias and cultural competency. Illinois stacks more mandated topics than most states, so a plan built on general hours will fall short.
Illinois counselor licenses expire March 31 of odd-numbered years — a fixed statewide date, not a birthday or an issue-month anniversary. That makes the deadline easy to remember and the mandated-topic list easy to underestimate, because Illinois packs more required subjects into its 30 hours than most states do.
The 30-hour cycle and its required subjects
Illinois LPCs and LCPCs complete 30 CE hours every two years through IDFPR-approved providers. Inside that 30:
- Ethics — 3 hours each renewal. Part of the near-universal ethics mandate.
- Sexual harassment prevention — 1 hour each renewal.
- Implicit bias — 1 hour each renewal. Connected to implicit bias CME by state.
- Cultural competency — 1 hour every six years, for renewals on and after January 1, 2025. See what boards mean by cultural competency.
That is four distinct mandated subjects, three of them every cycle. It is more than Georgia requires and structured differently from Connecticut's annual model.
The LCPC supervision wrinkle
LCPCs carry one extra item: a one-time 9 hours of clinical supervision training, counted within the 30-hour total. It is one-time, so once you have done it, it is behind you — but new LCPCs need to schedule it. This is a clean example of a one-time requirement living inside a recurring total.
The cultural-competency cadence is the sneaky one
Three of the four mandated subjects recur every cycle, so they stay top of mind. Cultural competency is the outlier — 1 hour every six years for renewals on and after January 1, 2025. A six-year cadence is exactly long enough to forget, the same hazard as Connecticut's six-year veterans course. Mark it the day you complete it.
First-renewal exemption
No CE is required for the first renewal period after initial licensure. As always, do not let the free cycle erode the habit — first cycles have quirks, and the second arrives with the full 30 hours plus all the mandated subjects.
Titles and provider approval
Illinois uses LPC and LCPC, while neighboring and other states use LPCC, LMHC, and other letters — the same job, different letters explains the variation, which matters if you are licensed in more than one state. Provider approval is through IDFPR, so confirm a course qualifies before banking it — how to tell if a provider is accredited helps.
A clean Illinois LCPC cycle
Bank 30 hours by March 31 of the odd year, including 3 ethics, 1 sexual harassment prevention, and 1 implicit bias every cycle, plus 1 cultural competency every six years and — if you are an LCPC who has not yet — the one-time 9 supervision hours. Keep certificates for an audit. Confirm current rules with IDFPR.
If tracking four mandated subjects on three different cadences plus a one-time supervision course sounds like a lot to hold in your head before a fixed March deadline, we will map it. White Glove CME builds a written Illinois LCPC plan for a flat $99 per license renewal — planning only, no credit granted, no IDFPR login. See pricing or tell us your details. Common questions
- How many CE hours do Illinois counselors need?
- Thirty hours every two years, with several mandated topics including ethics, sexual harassment prevention, implicit bias and cultural competency.
- What is the Illinois sexual harassment prevention requirement?
- A mandated hour of training required across many Illinois professional licenses. It is separate from ethics and not satisfied by it.
- Does Illinois require implicit bias CE?
- Yes, alongside cultural competency. Illinois is one of the states that treats these as distinct requirements rather than a single topic.
- Do the mandated topics count toward the 30 hours?
- Yes, they sit inside the total. The constraint is that they must be on those subjects specifically.
- What happens if I miss one mandated topic?
- Renewal is affected even where your total is met. Extra general hours never substitute for a required subject.
