Indiana CME Requirements for Physicians (MD/DO)

Indiana is one of the few states with no mandatory CME for physician license renewal. The old 2-hour opioid requirement for controlled substance registration expired in 2025. Here is what actually applies and what to watch for.

Concierge CME planning — we map exactly what you need for renewal, so nothing is left to guesswork.

If you hold an unlimited physician (MD) or osteopathic physician (DO) license in Indiana, the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana does not require any general continuing medical education to renew your license. Indiana licenses renew on a two-year cycle, expiring October 31 of each odd-numbered year. Until recently, physicians who held a controlled substance registration had to complete 2 hours of opioid prescribing CME, but that state requirement expired effective July 1, 2025. Below is the full picture, including the federal training rule that still applies to DEA registrants.

No mandatory CME

Indiana imposes no general CME requirement to renew an MD or DO license.

2-year renewal

Licenses renew every two years, expiring October 31 of odd-numbered years.

Opioid rule expired

The former 2-hour opioid CSR CME requirement expired July 1, 2025.

Federal DEA rule still applies

DEA registrants remain subject to the federal MATE Act 8-hour training requirement.

How many CME hours Indiana physicians need

The answer is unusual: zero hours are mandated by the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana for renewal. Indiana does not tie continuing medical education to renewal of an unlimited physician or osteopathic physician license. Many physicians still pursue CME for board certification, hospital privileges, and professional standards, but the state itself sets no minimum.

Opioid and controlled substance training

Indiana previously required 2 hours of CME on opioid prescribing and opioid abuse for physicians renewing a controlled substance registration (CSR). That state requirement expired effective July 1, 2025, and applicants renewing a CSR after that date no longer need to show opioid CME to the state. Separately, physicians who hold a federal DEA registration are subject to the federal MATE Act 8-hour training requirement, which is enforced by the DEA rather than the Indiana board.

Renewal cycle and deadlines

Indiana physician and osteopathic physician licenses renew every two years and expire on October 31 of each odd-numbered year. Even though no CME is required, keep your renewal current and verify your controlled substance registration deadlines, which follow their own schedule.

Always confirm with your licensing board

The Medical Licensing Board of Indiana does not impose a general continuing medical education requirement for renewing an unlimited physician (MD) or osteopathic physician (DO) license. Indiana previously required 2 hours of opioid prescribing CME tied to controlled substance registration (CSR) renewal, but that state requirement expired effective July 1, 2025. Physicians with DEA registration remain subject to the separate federal MATE Act 8-hour training requirement, which is a federal DEA rule and not an Indiana board rule.
